The North Royalton Community Band (NRCB) is searching for a new Music Director. This is a volunteer position that will begin in May 2025.
Founded in 1998, the NRCB is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
We rehearse weekly on Thursday nights at the North Royalton City Hall from 7 to about 8:45. We have about 4 concerts a year that are typically held at Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church & School on Sundays at 6pm. There are about 40 members in the band currently.
Our 2024-2025 schedule had rehearsals starting in November for the Christmas concert, with a planned outdoor concert in June/July to finish the season. We can continue with this schedule or return to our prior September to May calendar.
Duties:
- Be the Music Director and public spokesperson for the band.
- Direct the band, conduct rehearsals and performances, delegate that authority to others as needed.
- Coordinate with the band’s Executive Board about any equipment that will be needed at a concert.
- Select the music for rehearsals and performances, with any assistance needed from the Executive Board of the NRCB.
- Have the authority, with appropriate discretion, to act responsibly on behalf of the NRCB in all matters which require prompt or summary action.
- Work cooperatively with the Executive Board of the NRCB.
- Communicate effectively, collaboratively, and in a timely manner with the Executive Board and band members, as necessary.
- Prepare the band to perform approximately 4 concerts per year.
- Assist with recruitment efforts for musicians and guest performers such as vocalists and narrators.
Qualifications
- Formal education in, and experience with, instrumental music and conducting.
- Strong leadership and musicianship skills.
- The ability to promote a positive band atmosphere that facilitates musical growth and enrichment of the band experience.
- Comfortable giving clear, concise, and positive direction to band members of all ages and experience levels.
- Strong familiarity with music that will entertain, educate, and grow the band’s audience.
- Works well with the Executive Board, the band members, and any assistant or guest conductors.
- Accountable to following through on Executive Board expectations consistent with the position.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Weekly commitment during the school year and possibly some of the summer.
- A sense of humor and willingness to have fun!
- Expertise in leading and teaching non-professional musicians, with a deep understanding of the social and artistic needs of amateur music makers.
- Ability to communicate effectively with band members.
